Professional Development - Toolkit for the Literacy Roadtrip

The Rockingham County Literacy Project, in conjunction with Reading Connections (the adult literacy project in Guilford County), is pleased to announce a wonderful upcoming staff and tutor development opportunity.  We hope you can all be present at the Rockingham County Literacy Project on both Fridays, August 29 and September 5, from 10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m., with an hour for lunch.  This is an 8-hour training.

This opportunity will include training on the use of Reading Connections' level-based Toolkit for the Literacy Roadtrip (c) and use of authentic materials, focus on student goals and interests, and universal use of instructional best practices for adults with learning difficulties.   Instruction will be provided in phonological awareness, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension--all within a carefully designed format based on how struggling students learn.  Training topics include:
  • Characteristics and needs of students with reading difficulties
  • Integrating multisensory instruction
  • Impact of scope and sequence on skill acquisition
  • Assessment and progress monitoring
  • Staff and tutors will also be trained and given a toolkit according to the skill level(s) of their adult student(s), along with a checklist of competencies, lesson plans, and exercises.
This training is made possible by a generous grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation.  All paid instructional staff and all active (or inactive) tutors are expected to attend.

W are very excited about this training and can hardly wait to be in class with you, learning how to provide even better instruction for our students!
