The RCLP will be having a STAR Reading Training on Monday, August 30, from 5:30-8:30 p.m., at the Rockingham County Literacy Project, 705-A Washington Street, Eden. The trainers will be Joyce Burgart and Kathy Chase.
Joyce and Kathy attended STAR Training (evidence-based reading instruction, targeting intermediate-level readers) at Davidson County CC in September, October, and November. They have been using this method with their students and are now prepared to share their learnings with us. The STudent Achievement in Reading (STAR) program is a "nationally-developed professional development opportunity, that will help instructors improve reading outcomes among intermediate-level adult learners so that they can transition to higher level learning and succeed in the workplace as well as in their daily lives." Participants will learn about the four components of reading: alphabetics, comprehension, fluency, and vocabulary. Although this program is designed for teachers of intermediate-level readers, teachers of all levels of reading can benefit from the information presented.
Intermediate-level readers are those scoring between 211 and 235 on any of the CASAS Reading assessments. Students often reach a plateau in their reading levels at this point, and it is difficult for them to progress. The STAR program is based on diagnostic testing (which Joyce and Kathy have agreed to do for our students!) and then working on the specific skills for each student, based on his/her profile.
This is a don't miss professional development opportunity! Join us on Monday, August 30, for a fun and meaty learning experience. Please call Jean at (336) 627-0007 or e-mail email@example.com to pre-register so that we can be sure to have enough handouts.
