9/11 Remembrance & Day of Service

The Rockingham County Literacy Project’s English Language/Civics classes, comprised of students whose first language is not English, each year sponsor a Civics project.  Characterized by aspects of civil liberties as defined in our democracy and demonstrated by our national life, this year’s project focused on:

9/11 Remembrance & Day of Service

The project began with a viewing of the short film, “Twin Towers,” which featured the Emergency Service unit of the New York City Police, whose members were some of the initial first responders to the 9/11/2001 attacks on the World Trade Center.

The students of the RCLP were inspired by the moving portraits of courage and self-sacrifice that so many exhibited on that day that we all remember.

In conjunction with the grand opening of the Lord’s Pantry, the way forward was clear - hold a student- and staff-wide food drive, with all foods going to the Pantry.  This would involve all the RCLP students.

The resulting display was in place before 9:00 a.m. on Friday, September 9, and remained on display until the donations had been distributed to the Lord’s Pantry.
